WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API: which one does your business need?
By the MeAPI team · · 2 min read
WhatsApp offers businesses two products. The WhatsApp Business app is free and runs on a phone. The WhatsApp Business Platform, usually called the WhatsApp Business API or Cloud API, is for companies that need more people, more messages and automation. Here is how to choose.
The short answer
- One or two people, a few dozen chats a day: the app is enough.
- A team answering one number, broadcasts to hundreds, a chatbot or integrations: you need the API, through a platform such as MeAPI.
Side by side
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API (with a platform) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | The phone plus a few linked devices | Any number of agents, each with a login |
| Broadcasts | Broadcast lists, only to people who saved your number | Approved template campaigns to opted-in contacts, at your Meta limit |
| Chatbots | Greeting and away messages, quick replies | Full chatbots, forms, AI answers |
| Integrations | None | Shopify, WooCommerce, Google Sheets, webhooks, REST API |
| Reports | Basic message statistics | Delivered, read, replied, agent response times |
| Cost | Free | Meta’s per-message charges + the platform’s fee |
What the API needs
A Facebook account, a business (Meta Business portfolio), and a phone number. Connecting takes about ten minutes through Meta’s Embedded Signup — see how to get the WhatsApp Business API in India.
You can now use both
With coexistence, a number that runs the WhatsApp Business app can also be connected to the API. You keep chatting from your phone, while your team, campaigns and chatbots work from the panel, and messages from both sides appear in one inbox. Read how coexistence works.
Avoid unofficial tools
Browser extensions and “WhatsApp Web senders” automate a personal session against WhatsApp’s terms and put the number at risk of a ban. The official API is the only approved way to message at scale.
